The most spellbinding kimonos derive their beauty from intricate imagery from within the natural world. Most popular images are created by katazome, a traditional Japanese rice paste resist technique that is applied to fabric through stencils. Students will develop design ideas by observing objects in nature, such as leaves, flowers, and branches from the surroundings in Vermont. Then cut special stencil paper(shibugami) to print. Rice paste (bran & sweet rice flour) and soybean juice recipes, stencil cutting, application of sumi ink, natural mineral pigments and other paints are instructed. The class will emphasize creativity and exploration inspired by the Japanese dyeing/printing tradition. Traditional style of fabric stretcher will be used.

Quiet environmnet, good food, and work all day! Special Japanese tools, such as bamboo fabric stretchers are ready for you! Design, cut stencil, apply rice paste, paint natural pigments and/or brush natural dyes.
